Any ability: taking ordinary service for adults with disabilities to an extraordinary level

Thursday 4 PM to 5 PM
This was an inspiring program but It was unfortunate that the first presenter was so painfully nervous that it made for an awkward presentation. She was physically distressed which made her difficult to watch. Fortunately the following presenters from the Anythink Library were very engaging.
The Anythink Library had groups of adults with disabilities who regularly visited their library. They usually found tables to sit at way back in the library and weren't really using the library. Staff decided to become advocates for shifting perceptions about this population and consciously create partnerships and programming for adults with disabilities. They changed the culture of the library and provided tools and training for staff.
Some tips and techniques for staff included speaking to the person and not to the interpreter, focusing on the individual, be considerate and relax. The majority of their programming appeared to be a combination of storyteller and craft activities.
In 2016 they are incorporating new programming formats - including extending craft time, including more participatory activities and guest presentations from local  resource specialists. In March they had a partnership with the family theater company and had an acting workshop. Staff were surprised at how popular the program was - it had their greatest turnout - 50 participants. Actors came and taught acting techniques. One segment had the audience acting out to music they were hearing and got the greatest response from individuals who usually weren't very demonstrative.
Staff are currently planning a boxing technique program with the local gym owner and also a job fair with the community businesses who hire people with disabilities.
The Anythink Library created a welcoming environment where staff developed successful partnerships and programming for people with disabilities, realizing that "A community that excludes even one member is no community at all."

  1. This is fantastic information. What a great way to bring awareness to this segment of the community and to create community buy-in so that others also take part in offering resources and valuable experiences. Sounds like a great program.
